The problem with Net Neutrality is that it became a political issue before the techies got to define it. Without an uncritcal mass of techies who could say exactly what it was, ordinary users had no idea how critical the issue really was.

Fact is, most people can't tell you what the Net is. They might recognize an ethernet cable, or a Wi-Fi base station. But beyond that about all they know is that it comes from the phone or cable company.

But what if people actually knew how well the Net and its providers worked for them? What if they could look at their connection speeds the same way they look at spedometers in their cars? What if they could monitor packet loss or link quality with the same ease as they check signal strength on a cell phone? What if they could see by a simple indicator that the wi-fi connection at the conference they're attending won't allow outbound email?

For years we've had geeky ways of looking at the network to see what's going on. We can ping addresses, run traceroutes, or use ifconfig or iwconfig to check settings, to name a familiar tools.
